Costa Navarino – The Highlights
One of my most dreamy recent travel experiences was to The Romanos Resort at Costa Navarino, an eco-luxury hotel in Greece, in the Southwest Peloponnese.
Built discreetly into the natural landscape, this five-star resort has sustainable practices and tranquility high on its agenda and has won an array of Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Travel Awards. Thanks to its luxurious touches, attention to detail and opportunities aplenty to indulge (not to mention it’s glorious weather) it’s also oozing with romance and is a gorgeous place to escape on your honeymoon.
This list could go on, but here are 10 things you and your love could do during your honeymoon in this dreamy far-flung place.
1. Bliss out on a couples’ spa treatment in the Anazoe Spa
The term ‘walk in and float out’ may be used a little too much in the spa world. But you can guarantee that deep relaxation and rejuvenation is high on the agenda at the luxurious Anazoe spa.
Start your spa experience at this 4,000m² wellness sanctuary by dedicating an hour or two to the various different mist showers, steam rooms and herbal saunas before your treatment. The Anazoe Spa has various kinisiotherapy, thalassotherapy and floating pools of differing salt contents, which are said to have healing properties. And you can dare your partner to brave the Scottish shower (basically a bucket of cold water you tip over your head!) or ice grotto to truly wash away the toxins!
Many of the treatments at Costa Navarino’s rejuvenating spa are based on ancient Greek practicess. So expect to enjoy a treatment using only natural local herbs and products. The use of local olive oil is particularly popular.
Personally, I’d highly recommend you both have the Melisseus, The Spirit of Honey massage. This signature massage uses heat to apply a soothing honey wax candle to the skin. It uses strong massage techniques, which are perfect for getting rid of knots. Plus it feels absolutely gorgeous on your skin. If you’re both able to wake from your sleepy state, you and your newlywed can then enjoy a bit of time just lying in your robes in the serene relaxation area and sip on mint tea. This is a great way to unwind and add some luxury to your honeymoon.
2. Enjoy the VIP treatment
Costa Navarino have a team of butlers who are available on request, which is great for couples who don’t feel like lifting a finger after their wedding. When you see the spacious modern rooms, his ‘n’ hers sinks, rainforest shower and gorgeous beds, admittedly, you’ve already got the wow factor. (And you can order a buggy to take you to its array of restaurants) – but for the ultimate in indulgence, enjoy a romantic meal for two in complete privacy within your own luxurious room. The Romanos also offers The Luxury Collection Concierge which is perfect for honeymoon couples in search of a special VIP service.
3. Take a drive in the hotel’s fleet of BMWs
You know you’re in a luxury hotel when you are loaned your own BMW for a few hours. Ask the staff for the keys to one of their Beemers and then use it as you please. From dropping into the local town of Pylos for coffee and perusing the shops of trendy Gualova, to just cruising along the stunning coastline, this is a great way to explore the area, and feel like a VIP on your honeymoon.
4. Dine on delicious cuisine
One of the most romantic spots at The Romanos is The Flame Grill. Make sure you get a table outside which looks out over the rolling countryside. Once the sun goes down, you can dine under the stars on delicious steaks. Elsewhere, you have an impressive 11 other places to feast on Greek and other international cuisine.
5. Kick back in a cabana and drink cocktails
Nothing says honeymoon bliss more than kicking back by the pool with a cocktail and book in hand and couples can easily do that at Costa Navarino.
The main pool at The Romanos has at least two cabanas as well as plenty of sun beds scattered around. The bar is right in the centre so you’re never far away from a chilled glass of Greek wine, snacks or fruity cocktail for toasting your honeymoon.
6. Go for a cookery class
If it’s memories and experiences you’re after on your post-wedding escape, the Greek cookery classes offered at Costa Navarino are brilliant. They’re one of the many things you can book through the hotel and you will join two local ladies who can teach you how to make authentic Messinian cuisine. It adds something different to a honeymoon and you’re given recipes at the end of it so it’s something you can relive together once you’re back home. Oh and the views from the ladies’ house over Navarino Bay are dreamy.
7. Revel in your own private pool
If you’re looking for the wow factor on your honeymoon, Costa Navarino is perfect for that. Book into an Infinity room and you will have your own private plunge pool. Order a bottle of bubbly through room service and I think you could have the perfect luxury honeymoon highlight.
8. Hit the beach
Costa Navarino is set on a gorgeous stretch of beach. The sea is safe to swim in, the sand is clean and there’s a lovely breeze, which you’ll be thankful for during the hot summer months. There’s also a very stylish beachfront restaurant called Barbouni which serves delicious cocktails and mocktails, fresh salads and amazing seafood. The setting is spectacular and its ever-so-trendy, with the sail-like drapes which hand from the overhead beams and sway in the breeze…
9. Hire bikes and get active
Costa Navarino is made up of two areas – the five star The Romanos and the four star The Westin. At The Westin you’ll find Navarino Outdoors – a dedicated bike station where you can find everything from electric bikes to high-end mountain bikes suitable for rugged terrain. So why not pick a day on your honeymoon for being active? Especially if two weeks of lying poolside doesn’t do it for you. The surrounding countryside paths and olive groves are perfect for exploring together on two wheels.
10. Catch an al fresco movie
In the warmest months, The Romanos hosts movie nights, where top films are projected onto their huge outdoor screen. It’s like date night on your honeymoon and is a nice thing to enjoy if you want to mix things up while you’re on holiday.
11. Get philosophical
Greece is seeped in philosophical history and Costa Navarino offers a lovely insight into the likes of Aristotle and Socrates through its signature philosophy walks. Aside from stretching the mind and giving you the chance to deepen your understanding of these great philosophers, it also takes you on a walk through pretty olive groves and is held in a serene with stunning views over the rolling Peloponnese mountains. How’s that for adding something a little different to your honeymoon?
