Blow Dry Bars and salons that specialise in purely coiffing your locks to look as chic and pretty as possible – like Duck and Dry in Chelsea – are huge in the UK right now. Which is great news for we brides-to-be who want to have star-worthy hair on our big day.
The Duck and Dry salon is an oh so chic blow dry bar in London which I had the privilege of visiting recently. It’s situated on The Kings Road in Chelsea and is decked out in duck egg pops of colour, gorgeous shabby chic fixtures and bare brick walls, giving it a fabulous boutique feel. It’s no wonder it’s already become the favourite place for a quick style-over amongst The Made In Chelsea girls and many A-list stars.
For a bit of background, Duck and Dry is the brainchild of Yulia Rorstrom, who opened the flagship store at the end of last year. They have their team of ever so friendly hair experts – or shall we say, ‘ducks’ – and style-conscious ladies have been flocking to them since its opening.
The reason it’s such an appealing place for soon-to-be brides, is you can hire the whole salon out for a pampering and prosecco experience as part of a lavish bachelorette party with your best girlfriends.
You can also hire the blow dry bar for your actual wedding day (yes, amazing, I know). So if you’re holding your wedding in London, you can bring your bridesmaids and bridal party along with you and enjoy a little pre-wedding celebration, while you enjoy being pampered and preened. And it’s not all blow-dries either. You can get signature bridal updos, plaiting and all sorts of styling for your big day. Duck and Dry will also help you arrange to have your wedding make-up done while you are there.
And if you’d prefer to get ready in your home or in a plush hotel, they can come to you.
I was longing to have that straight-out-of-salon bounce in my lacklustre hair, so I was so pleased when my lovely ‘duck’ Andrea handed me a ‘menu’ of beautiful Duck and Dry styles to help me choose the right style. We decided a combination of their signature High Tide and Side Cascade styles would work for me.
My hair is quite heavy, so I struggle to get the style to hold sometimes. So in planning my own wedding – which we hope will be in the Caribbean – (yes, I just let that out), I am more than a little worried about what the humidity is going to do to my hair. But more on that later. Visiting Duck and Dry would be a brilliant way to get me thinking about what might work.
After a hair wash (where they have the most gorgeous tiled flooring), I was brought to my seat and delivered the obligatory cup of coffee (Duck and Dry has a small coffee bar) and glossy magazines – the added extras I so love when having that bit of ‘me’ time.
There’s no messing around in Duck and Dry. The aim is to have your new ‘do’ finished within a 30 minute slot, which is excellent if you are time deprived and have an important meeting or event to go to. If you have particularly curly hair and know that your hair can’t be styled in that length of time, I believe it’s possible to book longer following a little consultation on the phone.
I visited during Ascot and many of the stylists had been there since 7am preparing ladies’ hair around their ever-so-important hats ahead of the races. It was lovely to see they had some gorgeous hats and headpieces on display. Duck and Dry also feature various pieces of contemporary art which is available to buy.
Andrea was brilliantly efficient, applying plenty of movement (and that enviable brush work I can never achieve) into my hair as she blow dried it. She then sectioned it with some velcro rollers to give it the bounce it needed.
Finally, she applied a little bit of heat from the curling tongs to help achieve that side sweep at the front.
At the end of the 30 minutes, my flat and style-less locks had been transformed into bouncy and volumous waves. I absolutely loved it. I have to say, my hair was trying its absolute hardest to drop, as that’s just the way my hair’s always been. But even by the end of the day, it had that bounce and style I rarely achieve at home. I felt like it had really transformed my look.
Before and after shots…
If I was having my wedding in London, I would strongly consider using Duck and Dry. OK, so I probably won’t be packing Andrea into my suitcase to the Caribbean (although it’s an option!), but I shall certainly be considering a visit to this blow-dry bar as part of my own ‘bachelorette’ party, or in preparation for my pre/post-wedding celebrations.
It’s such a lovely, chic salon and I am dying to go back and try some of their updos and fishtail plaits.
What are you waiting for? Join the flock!
Until next time x
