Saturday night out: All Star Lanes, Holborn

Let me start by saying I love bowling. I don’t know if it’s come from my childhood memories of watching movies like Grease or a nostalgic thing that harks back to Saturday afternoons in Superbowl as a teenager. But there’s something really cool about a night at the bowling alleys. So in search of a fun night out at the weekend we hit up All Star Lanes in Holborn for a game or two.

Bowling has come a long way since the Superbowl and nasty 7up and cheesy nachos days. The All Star Lanes group have brought bowling to a whole new cool and classy level.

For a start, Superbowl is home to just four lanes, plus an exclusive ‘club house‘ where you can hire out two lanes plus your own cocktail bar all to yourself.

It’s quite hidden away in a basement off Bloomsbury Place in Holborn and it’s all so retro, you can’t help but feel like you’re stepping back into the 50s.

Think US style neon signs…

…And really cool art and old American style signs on the walls. There were even groups of people dressed in 50s style fancy dress. Think pedal pushers, big skirts and neck ties.

Yep, I was in my element already.

Word of advice if you’re thinking of heading to All Star Lanes – this place is in demand so book ahead. We managed to get a late slot around 10pm but we’ll definitely think about planning ahead and making a night of it next time.

Walk past the American style diner booths and you come to a really cool bar and seating area where you can chill out ahead of, or after your game.

There’s an amazing menu of cocktails, beers and spirits. And in the spirit of it all we opted for a milkshake each. A BOOZY cocktail, which All Stars like to call Hardshakes.

Oh yes.

Mr OhSo went for the ‘man’s milkshake’ a Honey Whiskey Ginger made from Jack Daniels, vanilla and homemade ginger syrup. And I went for the Boston Shake – a simple mouthwatering mix-up of Baileys and vanilla milkshake.

Oh my god. They were delicious.

Donning our bowling shoes we hit the lanes and I put my bowling skills to the test.

I don’t know if it was the boozy milkshakes (probably). Or the fact I was losing my concentration as the night went on, but my score went from 80 something to a rather terrible 50 something in the second game. And Mr OhSo will have great pleasure in reminding me that he beat me both times.

Still, I scored a couple of strikes, and this was hands down, one of the best Saturday nights I’ve had in ages.

There’s a great vibe, great music, brilliant drinks and I just love the lighting and retro feel of this place. Next time we’re going to make a night of it and get down to the diner for some burgers first.

If you’re looking for a different night out away from the bars and nightclubs, go to All Star Lanes, you’ll have such a giggle.

Filled with nostalgia from the old US movies, I couldn’t help but search You Tube for a clip of the bowling scene from Grease 2. ‘You’re gonna scooooore tonight.’

Sorry, I couldn’t help myself. I still want to be Stephanie Zinone (Michelle Pfeiffer’s character), 20 years on. Scroll down for a laugh.

Until next time x
