It started as a pop-up and proved so popular with health-conscious Londoners, the healthy-eating dining spot Redemption Bar has now opened on Notting Hill’s Chepstow Road. Oh So London’s new writer Lauren pays a visit to find out more…
The menu at Redemption was designed by a nutritional therapist, so absolutely everything on offer is wheat-free, vegan and low in sugar. They use organic ingredients, with a number of raw dishes to choose from. And, perhaps bravely, Redemption Bar is an alcohol-free venue with the mantra ‘spoil yourself without spoiling yourself’ and championing the idea of having a night out without the inevitable hangover.
After settling into the bright, airy interior, we started with the irresistibly soft and fragrant steaming sweet potato that had been baked and smothered with rich creamy coconut yogurt, with just the right amount of seasoning and a dash of sumac spice.
The Tokyo salad followed with a mellow miso and sesame flavour that took me straight back to Japan on al dente brown rice, with hijiki seaweed and fresh coriander. Next came the maki rolls, neatly encasing quinoa as a lighter alternative to sticky rice, with raw vegetables and avocado.
A personal favourite was the beetroot barley risotto, combining roasted heritage beetroot, summer peas with mint and pecan nut ‘cheese’, with barley that had soaked up each flavour but still had a satisfying bite. Another must-try is the grilled aubergine with tahini that’s then topped with yoghurt, toasted pine nuts, pomegranate seeds and micro basil that’s really packed with flavour.
Zucchini pasta con pesto brought a taste of the Mediterranean to the table, and the Vietnamese salad gave that Southeast Asian chilli kick with a spicy nam jim dressing that’s made according to the chef’s secret recipe.
Desserts are good for you too, but they certainly don’t feel like a compromise. A creamy indulgent cheesecake is made from cashews and coconut with an almond and date crust, and a rich dark chocolate tart consists of a raw cocoa, avocado, dates and coconut ganache on a hazelnut and Medjool date crust, both proving to be irresistibly good, and I could eat a whole dish of the sweet and tangy gooseberry sauce that comes on top of the coconut, chia and elderflower fool, served with a crisp lavender biscuit to scoop it all up.
Drinks are equally as exciting, incorporating cooling coconut water with fresh fruit and vegetable juices in a number of interesting combinations and served in cocktail glasses. I especially liked the beet-o-tini.
Having indulged to my heart’s content, it really was refreshing to leave satisfied without the feeling of gluttony; critics of healthy-eating will certainly be converted.
Until next time x
