We head to the American Bar at The Savoy Hotel to get the lowdown on the exclusive new Silver Revival cocktail, in honour of this year’s oh so glamorous Goodwood Revival…
When Oh So London were invited to a cocktail masterclass at The Savoy it was an offer we couldn’t turn down. In all its opulence, the classic hotel certainly doesn’t fail to impress and it was at the iconic American Bar –one of the world’s original cocktail bars – that we met the award-winning head bartender Erik Lorincz.
The reason for our visit was to find out about ‘The Silver Reviver’ – the new cocktail Erik created in honour of this year’s Goodwood Revival. Each year the revered racing track puts on a weekend celebration of vintage cars, fashion and music with a whole host of food and drink offerings. This year they’re going a step further by teaming up with The Savoy to pair the event with a cocktail that reflects the revival’s vintage glamour.
Erik Lorincz is one of only a handful of bartenders to have headed-up the American Bar so who better to do this challenge justice. And having taken inspiration from the Mercedes 1950s Silver Arrow, the cocktail he created couldn’t be more fitting. Being a popular tipple in The Savoy’s early days and very much in right now, gin is the spirit of choice.
As we take a seat at the bar, the immaculately dressed cocktail master mixes Bombay Sapphire with Cocchi Americano – an Italian aperitif famously used in The Savoy’s original Cocktail Book – and Kummel liqueur, a caraway and aniseed Danish signature. Lemon juice gives the cocktail its sour edge, which is balanced by sugar syrup, with a dash of egg whites to give the cocktail its silky smooth finish.
After straining the drink into a cocktail glass, edible silver is added for a touch of glamour, then it’s time to try the cocktail for ourselves. With the perfect balance of sweet and sour, it certainly didn’t disappoint.
You can try the Silver Reviver yourself at the Goodwood Revival, which takes place from 11th to 13th September, or at the American Bar in The Savoy. You won’t be able to find the Silver Reviver on the hotel’s cocktail menu; this one is available on request, so exclusively for those in the know.
