Love Mondays? Nope, thought not. And that wasn’t helped by it being particularly grey and drizzly this morning. But things soon brightened for commuters when they were greeted with a super cheery Gemma Cairney and a multi-coloured carpet covering one side of London Bridge today.
The ‘magical’ carpet is part of a global movement that’s launched known as Spark Your City. It’s aimed at bringing happiness to an otherwise mundane morning for city workers and will see colourful events like this happening all over the world. Genius, right?
The team behind Spark Your City invited me to join in the fun, so I set my alarm super early and hot footed it down to London Bridge, avec umbrella.
Unfazed by the rain, Gemma was hopping about in a shiny silver skirt with a furry fringe and a multi-coloured coat to match the carpet, and she was exuding bundles of energy. I watched on in full admiration as she handed out flowers and brought a little bit of sunshine to some of the 150,000 people who cross London Bridge each day.
Whilst Gemma was hard at work, myself and some other writers were extremely lucky to accept an invite to breakfast at AquaShard, a stone’s throw away from where Gemma was spreading her Spark Your City happiness. AquaShard is of course, the luxurious restaurant on Level 32 of the Shard Building.
So this meant we had fantastic views from here over London Bridge.
It was eggs all round (plus lobster and Hollandaise sauce for me – divine)… with plenty of coffee and instagram updates, of course.
Fully breakfasted up, I had another walk across the bridge to see the brilliant Gemma still brightening up people’s days.
Spark Your City will see more happiness ambassadors like Gemma joining in and the next one – Spark #2 Urban Jungle – will be on 12 August, where Blue Peter Presenter Helen Skelton will be carrying the baton for inspirational women. There will also be around 1,000 similar Spark Your City events happening across 50 different countries to join up the Spark Your City community.
I think it’s a brilliant way to remind us all that we deserve to include something enjoyable in our day, however big or small. And it’s also a reminder that there are millions of women like Gemma and Helen who are doing brilliant things too.
So head over to the Spark Your City website, check out what else we can look forward to and join in the fun!
It’s certainly been one of my most exciting Mondays in a while… Huge thank you to Spark Your City for inviting Oh So London to get involved.
Until next time x
