Hello cocktail lovers. A few weeks ago, I was invited to attend a masterclass at the South Place Hotel, led by Tom Vernon, the brand ambassador for Woodford Reserve, to learn how to create our own Woodford Reserve cocktail.
After learning all about this small craft bourbon, I, and several other writers were then invited to take part in the Classic American Cocktail Competition.
All we had to do design our own unique Woodford Reserve Cocktail in a Classic American style. There were two key rules: it had to be based upon one of these four classic cocktails:
– Old Fashioned
– Whiskey Sour
…and it had to be made using Woodford Reserve.
The winning cocktail recipe chosen by Tom Vernon will then be featured on the cocktail menu of the South Place Hotel for a whole month. How cool is that?
After umming and ahhing over different ideas for days, I finally decided I wanted my Woodford Reserve cocktail to a) have a culinary twist b) be based on the Old Fashioned and c) be Oh So indulgent.
So, lovely readers, let me introduce you to the Cocoa So Fashioned.
– 50ml Woodford Reserve
– cacao nibs
– a few dashes of Angostura Bitters
– 15ml chocolate brownie syrup (I used Monin)
– orange wedges
– ice cubes
Drop a handful of raw cacao nibs into your bottle of Woodford Reserve and leave for at least a week to allow the cocoa flavours to infuse. (FYI -you can buy cacao nibs in most health shops).
Take a classic tumbler, (or if you’re a hipster, a jam jar), chill it in the freezer and then fill with the chocolate brownie syrup, cacao-infused Woodford Reserve, ice, Angostura Bitters and stir gently.
Add a wedge of orange…
Stir once again…
…and then add serve with a chocolate brownie for that extra bit of indulgence (here are some I prepared earlier)..
…et voila. Your Cocoa So Fashioned is ready to serve.
The result is a deliciously smooth, ever so tangy and oh so indulgent drink that can be served as a Friday night treat or as an after dinner culinary cocktail.
Do you think it’s a winner? If it is, I will make sure you know about it.
Wish me luck.
Until next time x
