Beautiful Lake Filsø in West Jutland, Denmark

Lake Filsø in West Jutland, is an extraordinary place. The short story around it is that 160 years ago, it was the second largest lake in the whole of Denmark. Sadly, drainage linked to farming around the region then caused the lake to reduce in size, and prevented the wildlife from flourishing.

Thanks to a restoration project, that all recently changed. This huge expansive freshwater lake is now home to an abundance of geese, ducks, swans and other birdlife.

Even if you’re not of the twitching type, this is one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen. We took a stroll over during our stay at Henne Kirkeby Kro. Well, in truth, we were on a snaps tour (or ‘akvavit’ as it’s called in Denmark – with a local ranger. So we were strolling, while learning about the various herbs and plants that grow in this region, and taking regular sips of this strong stuff:

There was an incredible stillness about the place. I would just love to have this place on my doorstep. It was just begging to be photographed.

There is a watch tower here which you can climb up for fabulous panoramic views…

And on the way back we were graced with this spectacular sight of migrating geese…

Soon, the warmth of the snaps was wearing off and the sun was nearly set so it was back inside and out of the cold…

Cheers to one of the most beautiful places in Denmark. I hope to return one day.
