Beyrouths: Middle Eastern Street Food Impressing South London

I love heading out for a spontaneous weekend lunch. And my most recent was to Beyrouths – a cool chain restaurant to recently hit South London.

Mr OhSo and I had heard about their place in Streatham which has recently been joined by a sister restaurant in Balham and another in Wimbledon village. With quirky industrial-like interiors and a promise for fuss-free Middle Eastern food, we were eager to try it out.

The menu at Beyrouths is a variety of ‘mezzas’, meat skewers, shawarma (marinated) chicken, mixed grills, and various falafal, baba ghanoush, hummous and other side dips and sharing plates which characterise Middle Eastern cooking.

But by day, the menu at Beyrouths takes on a more ‘street food’ style. And the prominent menu item here is a ‘street wrap’ – a soft flatbread filled with a variety of the aforementioned meats.

But before we get to the food, the interiors at Beyrouths are definitely worth a mention.

Think cool, industrial-like concrete fixtures with bare light bulb lamps and walls decorated with huge black and white images of the streets of urban Beirut.

On a bright yellow floor you then have unmatched tables and chairs which look like they’ve either come from a school or a church with their retro book holders on the back.

We were there on a lovely sunny day and with the light streaming in, I just loved the cool urban vibe.

And worth a mention are the pink and green lemonades that Beyrouths serve. I had the green lemonade – a minty, lemony fizz that was so like a Mojito I almost convinced myself I was getting tipsy.

Mr OhSo had the pink one which was deliciously fruity. And they make for a great instagram shot.

Food wise, I went for a falafel wrap and asked them to throw in some extra halloumi cheese. I was surprised at how filling this was and the bread was amazing. The only downer I’d say is it was a tad bit dry, (I think there’s a tendency for that with falafel) so I dunked it in a bit of extra sauce and mayo which helped it out.

Mr OhSo (aka the carnivore) went for one of the meaty ones – chicken I think – which he said was really tasty.

And for a little under £20 for the lot it was a pretty good deal.

Good food, great friendly staff and a brilliantly cool vibe. I’m looking forward to going back for dinner and taking advantage of their BYOB.

Good job Beyrouths.
