I love Sundays. Especially one spent chilling on the sofa with a coffee, doing little more than reading the weekend papers and watching cookery programmes on TV.
But every now and then I love using Sundays to get out of my own neighbourhood and explore the many other amazing and diverse areas of London.
One place on my London bucket list is Columbia Road. Famous for its flower market, I was dying to see what all the fuss was about. So today, we headed East to check out this cockney mecca for wonderful blooms…..
We hopped off the tube at Old Street Station and within ten minutes we were at the end of Columbia Road. There are wonderfully quirky furniture shops and vintage stores here which are definitely worth browsing…
In between the many vintage stores you have coffee shops, bands playing music and lots of hidden mews and cobbled streets where you’ll find plant stores, furniture shops and all sorts of hidden gems.
Vintage queens will love the bric-a-brac and random baskets dotted around…
Then after the shops you hit the Flower Mecca – Columbia Road Flower market itself.
All I can say is wow. We saw all sorts, from bonsai trees, potted pansies, climbing outdoor plants and hundreds upon hundreds of big and colourful bouquets…. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE.
We particularly liked the chilli plants and picked up a few on the way.
This was my favourite stand. Lots and lots of beautiful roses and peonies….
I ended up buying a very pretty orchid which will go in my lounge and we then headed to Brick Lane to browse the vintage clothes stores and soak up the atmosphere.
If there’s one thing I’d say about visiting Columbia Flower Market is get there early.
The crowds were pretty crazy proving how popular it is.
They’re open from 8am until 3pm and if you’re there right at the end, you might even get a bargain. Be prepared to haggle.
I love exploring on a Sunday so let me know how you spend yours.
In the meantime I’m going to enjoy my beautiful new orchid.
Until next time x
